Frequently asked questions

There’s no one combination of ATAR, UCAT, and interview score that’s required to get into medicine. Each university has its own weighting and scoring system, though there are some generalised rules. ATAR and the VCE score you receive carry the most weight. It tends to sit around 50-65% of the overall requirement. The UCAT takes up another 20-35%.

These two scores tend to make up the shortlist, with the interview creating a similar percentage of the final decision. Students don’t need perfect scores in all three areas; a higher score in one area can help offset a slightly lower result in another. Consistency is most rewarded overall.

The medicine entry in Australia is becoming increasingly more competitive when compared to previous years. ATAR expectations are now well above 98, with many universities requiring scores in the 99+ range. The medicine entry requirements have become significantly more difficult as a result.

Strategic preparation and high scores in the UCAT and the interview process have led to a significant rise in the standard of applicants. Strong performance in one area is no longer enough; consistent, high performance is required by everyone seeking entry.

Breakthrough Education supports students at every stage of entry to medicine through progressive processes. We can help you understand how to get into medicine in Australia by building sustainable results, teaching the VCE, UCAT, and interview stages as completely separate, achievable skills.

The academic foundations that are crafted ensure that strong results are secured early on, without overwhelming the later stages, when UCAT and interview prep take over. We guide you in developing a well-rounded profile at every stage, whether it’s for a high-pressure exam or a one-on-one interview. This ensures that students are both academically strong and confident in every aspect of the process.

Some of the biggest mistakes that students make when applying for medicine include:

  • Leaving preparation too late
  • Focusing only on one area and neglecting other aspects
  • Memorising answers for interviews rather than developing knowledge
  • Not doing timed practice enough
  • Burning out early from unsustainable habits
  • Relying on passive study rather than doing active preparation
  • Underestimating the difficulty of the medicine entry requirements in Australia

There are differences between undergraduate and postgraduate medical pathways, including timing, entry requirements, and exam structure. Undergraduate medicine is entered directly after Year 12 and takes 5-6 years to complete. Entry requirements are based on ATAR, UCAT, and interview results.

Postgraduate medicine requires completion of a bachelor’s degree, followed by a 4-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. Entry is based on the GPA from the undergraduate degree, the GAMSAT, and an interview. Both result in full qualification to practice as a doctor.

UCAT is important for medical school entry in Australia, but it’s not necessarily more important than academic results. Both work together to provide an overall student profile upon entry. ATAR is the primary factor in initial applicant ranking, whilst the UCAT is a differentiating factor among students.

Once the interview stage is reached, the UCAT becomes significantly less important, and interview performance stands out more. Overall, though, students need to be strong in all areas to be a competitive applicant for a medical placement.

There are several alternative pathways if direct entry into medicine is unsuccessful. These include:

  • Postgraduate medicine pathway
  • An allied health degree, potentially transitioning to medicine later
  • Biomedical or science degree
  • Interstate or a lower-entry-threshold university
  • Rural or bonded entry schemes
  • Taking a gap year, then re-sitting the UCAT pathways
  • Completing a “Year 13” to increase results

Universities are beginning to place more emphasis on holistic selection beyond just scores, but this doesn’t mean that academic performance is any less important. Once students meet the academic requirements, the focus shifts to holistic requirements.

The pathway to medicine in Australia requires being a well-rounded student who can balance multiple aspects of professionalism and communication at once. Enrol in a course with Breakthrough Education, and learn the essential steps needed to gain entry into this competitive university program.
