Chemistry Tutor: Kevin Xiao

Chemistry is too important to leave to chance.

With three SACs and two final exams, students need the right strategy, discipline and expert guidance from the very beginning.

Whether you are aiming for a 45+ study score or a raw 50, Kevin brings the experience of teaching over 150+ Chemistry raw 50 students, giving you the confidence that their child is being guided by someone who truly understands what top performance requires.

First Principles Understanding

Build a deep understanding of the core ideas, not just the formulas. Students learn why concepts work so they can approach every topic with confidence.

Application of the Concept

Knowing the theory is not enough. Students must learn how to apply concepts accurately and effectively across a wide range of questions.

Mastering Every Variation

Top students prepare for more than the standard question types. They learn to recognise patterns, handle unfamiliar twists, and respond to every possible variation.

For students seeking exceptional growth

Your Journey Begins Here!

Learn how best to get a 45+ in Chemistry

Our Maths Methods exam preparation runs from May to November, giving students a structured pathway from SAC preparation to full exam readiness. Students revise key content, master exam style questions, improve timing, complete mock exams and build the confidence needed to perform at their best in both final exams.

Exam Preparation May to Nov

Maths Methods SAC #1 is often the most important SAC of the year. It gives teachers an early glimpse of a student’s standard and can be crucial in establishing a top ranking. Often heavily weighted, this SAC requires strong preparation from Day 1, including deep understanding, accurate application and exposure to every major question variation.

SAC #1 April to June

Maths Methods SAC #2 is often the separator SAC. Focused on calculus, it tests many of the skills that make Methods difficult: algebra, functions, graph analysis, rates of change, optimisation and unfamiliar application questions. This is where top students begin to separate themselves from the cohort, making strong preparation essential.

SAC #2 Jun to Aug

Maths Methods SAC #3 is the final opportunity to strengthen your SAC ranking before exam preparation begins. Focused on probability and statistics, this SAC requires precision, careful interpretation and strong technical skills. Students need to finish strongly, maintain their grades and build momentum as they transition into final exam preparation.

SAC #3 Aug to Oct

Frequently asked questions

Many students find VCE chemistry more overwhelming than Year 10 science because of the transition to analytical thinking. Year 10 science typically requires only simple recall, but Year 11 chemistry requires deeper explanation.

Mathematical components also become more complex, with calculations playing a larger role in the subject. Pacing of content also becomes much faster, and falling behind on certain topics can affect future understanding. VCE chemistry help is one of the best ways to prevent falling behind, providing the most efficient structure.

Several study methods actually work for retaining complex chemistry content. Each of these methods has been proven to help boost results, including:

  • Active recall through the use of examination questions
  • Practice applying concepts
  • Teaching certain concepts aloud
  • Link concepts together in each different application
  • Error logs and taking feedback
  • Spaced repetition

Breakthrough Education teach both theory and application effectively by combining them from the beginning of our tutoring process. Our VCE chemistry tutors help break down complex concepts, pairing them with exam questions to show how the knowledge is assessed.

This ensures that students become familiar with common question types and learn the most efficient ways to answer them. Applying concepts becomes significantly easier, and results improve due to greater comfort in exam-style settings.

In Chemistry, practice is significantly more important than memorisation. Exams aren’t a test of simply what you know, but rather of how well you can apply it. Memorisation is important for definitions and formulas, but knowing how to interpret questions and connect concepts is critical.

Developing the ability to adapt knowledge is crucial in exams, and students who rely strictly on memorisation can struggle in practice. Whilst memorisation can help start questions, the ability to put it into practice is what gives you marks.

Some common mistakes in Chemistry SACs and exams can impact marks, and knowing them can help you avoid making them. They include:

  • Answering questions in a general way rather than specifically
  • Not reading the questions fully
  • Poor exam technique and abilities
  • Making calculation errors
  • Memorising questions without understanding
  • Weak data interpretations
  • Poor time maintenance

Multi-step calculations and extended-response questions can be answered using a structured approach rather than relying on intuition. When working on multi-step calculations, identify the information that’s given and what the question is actually asking. Mapping out the steps can help to save time, and showing all the working out can help boost marks.

Extended response questions should answer exactly what the question is answering. This can be done by linking concepts together and structuring responses in a logical sequence. This is also important in UCAT questions, helping to solidify responses and create scoring opportunities.

A mid-range student is separated from a 40+ study score in Chemistry by their understanding and application of key concepts. Mid-range students tend to understand the content and hold a reasonable ability to apply it under exam conditions.

40+ students have the ability to instantly recognise question types and apply methods and knowledge efficiently. They avoid careless errors through repeated practice efforts of exam-style questions. Knowing how to track mistakes and use feedback to guide correction leads to consistent improvement over time. Year 11 chemistry tutoring can help create these foundational changes for a wide range of students.

With increasing competition in STEM career paths, students are optimising their chemistry studies to maximise their rankings for university pathways. They focus on achieving a strong study score by prioritising exam practice and finessing their technique. Students are optimising their subject combinations and scaling, helping to ensure that their chemistry studies complement their mathematics and English.

Building these solid foundations with chemistry tutoring in Year 11 can help students stay ahead of their competition. Enrol in a course with Breakthrough Education, and learn the techniques that will help you optimise chemistry for your dream university pathways.
